Fishing Tips - Netting

Netting a fish effectively is a crucial skill for any angler looking to successfully land a catch. This guide outlines the essential steps and considerations for using a landing net.

The Importance of a Good Net

Choosing the right net can significantly impact your success and the safety of the fish (if practicing catch and release).

Net Feature

Description

Size

The net opening should be large enough for the fish you are targeting.

Handle Length

A longer handle offers better reach, especially when fishing from a high bank or boat.

Net Material

Rubber or knotless mesh is preferred as it is less damaging to the fish's protective slime coat and reduces the chance of hooks getting tangled.

Portability

Folding or telescopic nets are easier to carry, especially for wade fishing.

Netting Technique

Effective netting is a coordinated effort between the angler, the person using the net, and the fish.

1. Tire the Fish

Before attempting to net, ensure the fish is tired and close to the surface. A fish that still has fight in it can easily thrash out of the net or break the line.

  • Lead the fish: Guide the fish towards the netter.
  • Keep the rod tip up: Maintain tension to control the fish's head.

2. Position the Net

The net should be submerged just under the surface, ready to scoop.

  • Submerge completely: The rim of the net should be completely underwater, pointing slightly downward and away from the fish.
  • Keep still: Do not chase the fish with the net. Let the angler guide the fish into the net.

3. Guide the Fish

The angler is responsible for bringing the fish over the submerged net.

  • Slide the fish over the rim: The fish's head should cross the rim of the net first.
  • Maintain momentum: Use the last bit of the retrieve to ensure the fish is moving over the net.

4. The Scoop

Once the fish is over the net, lift it quickly and decisively.

  • Lift straight up: Do not try to sweep the net through the water, as this creates resistance and can push the fish out.
  • Confirm the capture: Once the fish is in the net, lift the net out of the water to secure the fish.

Practice and Review

Reviewing your technique will improve your success rate. Consider reserving time to practice netting, especially if you are fishing with a new partner.
