Fishing Tips - Pay Attention to Bird Activity

Bird activity can be an excellent indicator of fish presence and feeding activity. Birds such as seagulls, pelicans, and terns are naturally drawn to schools of baitfish near the water's surface. Larger predatory fish often hunt these baitfish, so spotting diving or circling birds can be a sign that fish are feeding below.

Tips for Using Bird Activity to Your Advantage:
  1. Follow the Flock: When you notice a flock of birds circling or diving in a specific area, it's worth casting in that direction. Predatory fish like bass, tuna, and striped bass often follow baitfish schools, leading to great fishing opportunities.
  2. Identify Different Bird Species: Different birds target various types of prey. For instance, seagulls often indicate small baitfish near the surface, while cormorants or pelicans diving deeper may suggest larger fish beneath.
  3. Look for High Activity During Low-Light Conditions: Bird activity can be more intense during early morning or late evening when fish are more active and feeding closer to the surface. Fishing during these times may increase your chances of success.
  4. Be Prepared for Fast Action: When fishing near diving birds, keep your tackle ready, as fish can move quickly with the bait. Use lures that mimic the size and color of the baitfish the birds are targeting.
  5. Stay Mobile: Birds—and the fish below—can move quickly across the water. If the birds shift locations, consider following them to stay on top of active fish.

By watching and interpreting bird behavior, you can gain valuable insights into where to cast and what type of fish may be lurking below, giving you an edge in finding active fish.
