Hunting Tips - Clothing and Scent Control

Strategic Clothing for the Hunt

The right clothing is crucial for both comfort and success, offering protection from the elements while minimizing your visual and olfactory presence.

Layering System

Effective hunting attire relies on a three-part layering system to manage temperature and moisture without adding excessive bulk.

Layer Type

Purpose

Material/Example

Base Layer

Wicks moisture away from the skin

Merino wool, synthetic polyester

Mid-Layer

Provides insulation and warmth

Fleece, down, heavy wool

Outer Layer

Protection from wind and rain

Water-resistant or waterproof shell (Gore-Tex, treated nylon)

Camouflage Selection

Choose a pattern that matches the terrain and foliage where you hunt. A general rule is to select a pattern with colors that blend into the predominant natural colors of the area during the current season.

  • Tree/Forest Camouflage: Best for wooded environments, utilizing greens, browns, and dark limbs.
  • Open/Field Camouflage: Uses lighter tans, grays, and dead grass patterns for fields or open plains.
  • Snow Camouflage: Primarily white with minimal dark patterns for winter conditions.

Scent Control: The Critical Factor

A deer or other game animal's sense of smell is far superior to human detection. Controlling human scent is often the most important factor in a successful close-range hunt.

The Scent Elimination Process

Follow this regimen before every hunt to minimize your odor profile.

  1. Laundry: Wash all hunting clothes in a specialized, scent-free detergent. Do not use standard detergents, fabric softeners, or dryer sheets. Store clean clothes in an airtight container or bag, like a heavy-duty plastic tote or scent-proof bag.
  2. Shower: Shower with scent-free soap and shampoo before heading out. Focus on areas that tend to sweat heavily. Do not use deodorants, colognes, or scented hair products.
  3. Application: Apply a scent-elimination spray to your body and all gear—including boots, backpacks, and weapons—immediately before walking to your stand or blind.

Managing Scent in the Field

While in your hunting area, continue to manage your scent with these tips:

  • Wind Direction: Always hunt downwind of where you expect the game to approach. Wind direction is your primary defense against detection. Check the forecast before your hunt and monitor it with a wind-checker puff bottle or similar tool while hunting.
  • Odor Eliminating Technology: Consider clothing treated with activated carbon or other chemical odor-absorbing technologies. This gear works by adsorbing scent molecules.
  • Natural Cover Scents: In some areas, hunters use cover scents like pine, cedar, or earth to mask human odor.
