Hunting Tips - Use a Predator Call Strategically

A predator call can be a powerful tool, even if you're not hunting predators. Here's how to use it effectively:

  1. Choose the Right Call
    • Select a call that mimics the natural sounds of prey in distress, such as a rabbit squeal or fawn bleat. These sounds attract predators like coyotes, foxes, or bobcats.
  2. Stir Movement in the Area
    • Using a predator call in a game-rich area can create a ripple effect. While predators might approach the sound, prey animals like deer may also start moving to avoid potential danger.
  3. Set Up in a Good Vantage Point
    • Position yourself in a spot with a clear view of likely approach paths. Predators are cautious and will often circle downwind before coming in.
  4. Blend in Perfectly
    • Stay camouflaged and minimize movement. Predators rely heavily on their sight and hearing, so any sudden motion could alert them to your presence.
  5. Time It Right
    • Early mornings and evenings are prime times for predators to hunt, making your calls more effective during these periods.
  6. Use Calls Sparingly
    • Don't overuse the call, as it may sound unnatural and spook the animals. A few short bursts every 10-15 minutes work best.
  7. Pair It with Decoys
    • If possible, combine the call with a visual decoy like a moving rabbit or a turkey. This can make your setup more convincing.
  8. Stay Patient
    • Predators might take time to respond to your call, so stay vigilant and avoid moving too soon. Watch all potential entry points.

By mastering the use of predator calls, you not only increase your chances of predator hunting success but also stimulate movement among other game animals, making it a versatile tactic in the field.
