The NRA GAOS is the largest and best, in my opinion, outdoor show in the world. Not only does it offer hundreds of products for sale, hunts you can book, and the latest in firearms and fishing gear, but you can meet the legends of the outdoors, have them demonstrate a product, and autograph it. That was the case when I stopped by Eddie Salter’s booth last week. He entertained a family with five small daughters, signed one of his custom box callers, and helped the toddlers learn how to use it.

Eddie Salter is a renowned turkey hunter and expert who has won many calling contests. He’s also a deer hunter and has appeared on TV and in magazines.

Salter and I hunted together at the White Oak Plantation many years ago, which may be why he shared one of his secrets. You can turn any box caller into a gobble-box by moving a rubber band three-quarters of the way toward the end of the box. Turn the caller around, shake it, and it makes a great simulated gobble.
