North America Has the “Big Five” of Hunting

Similar to Africa's famous "Big Five" game animals, North America has its own set of large, challenging, and highly sought-after species for hunters. These animals require skill, patience, and in many cases, special permits to hunt legally.

1. Moose (Alces alces)
  • The largest member of the deer family, moose can weigh over 1,500 pounds and stand 6 to 7 feet tall at the shoulder.
  • Found in Canada, Alaska, and the northern U.S., moose are prized for their massive antlers and lean meat.
  • Despite their size, moose are fast runners and can swim long distances.
2. Elk (Cervus canadensis)
  • One of the most popular big-game species, elk are known for their majestic antlers and impressive bugling calls.
  • Mature bulls can weigh over 1,000 pounds and grow antlers spanning 4 feet wide.
  • Elk are commonly hunted in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, and Canada.
3. Bison (Bison bison)
  • Once nearly extinct due to overhunting, American bison populations have rebounded thanks to conservation efforts.
  • Bison can weigh over 2,000 pounds, making them the largest land animal in North America.
  • Limited hunting permits are available in areas like Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota.
4. Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis)
  • The most powerful predator on the list, grizzly bears can weigh over 1,000 pounds and stand 8 feet tall on their hind legs.
  • They are known for their strength, aggression, and keen sense of smell.
  • Hunting grizzlies is highly regulated, with limited opportunities in Alaska and parts of Canada.
5. Mountain Lion (Puma concolor)
  • Also known as cougars, pumas, or panthers, mountain lions are the largest wild cats in North America.
  • Weighing up to 200 pounds, they are stealthy predators capable of leaping over 20 feet in a single bound.
  • Mountain lion hunting is legal in select states like Colorado, Montana, and Idaho, where populations are well-managed.

Hunting North America's Big Five is a true challenge, requiring expertise, preparation, and often years of experience. Due to conservation efforts, many of these species have strict hunting regulations to maintain healthy populations.
