The Marker Buoy Trick

What is the Marker Buoy Trick?

The "Marker Buoy Trick" is a creative—and slightly mischievous—method of saving a location at sea when you've discovered a spot teeming with fish, but you aren't ready to drop anchor yet. It's all about stealthily marking your exact spot without alerting other anglers to your secret honey hole.

Why Use the Trick?

You've found a goldmine of fish, but you need to run back to shore for more bait or a forgotten net. You want to make sure you return to the exact same coordinates. Traditional methods like GPS logging are great, but the physical presence of a non-standard marker buoy is a powerful, low-tech guarantee.

The Materials You'll Need

Gather these items for your mission:

  • The Buoy: Not a standard fishing buoy! Use something common, but usually not found floating in the open ocean, like a bright pool noodle, a neon-colored plastic bottle, or a small, distinctive piece of junk—make it look accidental.
  • The Weight: Enough weight to keep the "buoy" from floating away immediately. A small bag of rocks, a spare fishing weight, or even a can of beans.
  • The Line: A light fishing line or thin rope that connects the weight to the buoy. The length should be appropriate for the depth of the water you are in.
  • The Map/GPS: A reliable way to log the spot before you drop the "marker."

Performing the Trick: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Discover the Spot

First, you must find your amazing fishing spot. Take a moment to log the coordinates on your GPS or note a few distinct landmarks on the coast before you do anything else.

Step 2: The Stealth Drop

Ready the marker buoy and weight. When no other boats are looking, or you are moving slowly, gently toss the weighted marker buoy into the water at your exact fishing location. The marker should be subtle and designed to look like accidental debris, not a deliberate marker.

Step 3: Evacuation

Move your boat away from the area slowly and non-chalantly. You don't want to look like you're leaving a specific spot. Head to your next destination to restock.

Step 4: The Triumphant Return

When you return, use your GPS coordinates to guide you back to the exact location. Keep an eye out for your unique "buoy." No one else will suspect that piece of floating trash marks the best fishing spot for miles!
