Trout Fishing Tips - Structural Positioning

Seasonal Spring Positioning

In early to mid-May, trout transition from their deep wintering holes into shallower littoral zones for spawning and active post-spawn feeding.

  • Shoreline Edges: To maximize your time in the strike zone, focus casts parallel to the bank rather than perpendicular.
  • Drop-offs and Shelves: Position yourself at the transition point where shallow flats meet deep water. These "shelves" are prime ambush points.
  • Windward Banks: Target the side of the lake where the wind is blowing toward the shore, as this movement pushes plankton and baitfish into the shallows, attracting predatory trout.

Current and Flow Management

When fishing rivers like the South Platte, water velocity dictates trout positioning.

  • Eddies and Seams: Trout will hold in slower water directly behind rocks or along the "seams" where fast and slow currents meet to conserve energy while waiting for food.
  • Tailwaters: Below dams, position your presentation in oxygenated "bubbles" or plunge pools where fish wait for disoriented prey.
  • Submerged Structures: Always look for submerged logs, rocks, or weed beds, which provide shelter and primary ambush points.

Tactical Positioning Matrix

Scenario

Ideal Positioning

Recommended Technique

River Trout

Upstream of deep pools

Dead drift with nymphs

Reservoir Trout

Near rocky points (12–18 ft)

Slow bottom bouncing or suspended jigs

Heavy Cover

Close proximity to timber/brush

Pitching or flipping for precision

Low Back-Cast Room

Under overhanging trees

Roll cast to minimize disturbance

Timing and Stealth

The conditions of mid-May require specific environmental adaptations to your positioning strategy.

  • Mid-Day Advantage: Unlike the summer months, mid-day is often more productive in May because the sun needs time to warm the shallow waters.
  • Stealth Requirements: Maintain a low profile on the bank. In clear spring water, trout are highly sensitive to ground vibrations and shadows cast over the water.
  • Turbidity Adjustments: If runoff has increased water turbidity, use high-visibility lures or scents to help the fish locate your presentation in the murky current.
